Is Global Warming Myth or Science?
The rich conglomerates out there, the ones with all sorts of money invested in the fuels that are killing us (Not killing Earth--the planet will survive global warming. We won't.) have a vested interest in demoting Global Warming as a problem. Here's a few things you might hear from the evil and the ignorant alike. "The global warming myth might not be true. Its something we can't really measure." Sorry, wrong. 100% global warming myth. Not only is human impact on the environment observable, it is also measurable. The massive amounts of methane and carbon dioxide we're releasing into the atmosphere have initiated a climate shift--global warming. Hurricane Katrina's fierceness was directly attributable to factors caused by global warming. The heat waves in Europe--ditto. The icecaps at both poles are starting to melt away, and the many glaciers, which are often a steady source of drinkable water, are vanishing. "The temperature is going to rise by 2.5 degrees. That's just not enough to be concerned about. It's just another global warming myth." But this is actually the global warming myth. This figure comes from the The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and, while correct, is being downplayed. This figure is averaged out for the entire world. Some places, such a Great Britain, have already experienced deadly heat waves that were more than a 2.5 degree increase. The global temperature has remained relatively consistent since the last ice age; but the rise of modern industry has been raising it steadily. The fact is that two and half degrees are more than enough to throw the world into a massive climate shift, and we're just starting to experience it. This is no global warming myth. "Earth's atmosphere cleanses itself of carbon dioxide fairly quickly. Even if we did have something to worry about, we have plenty of time to take action." That's partially true. "Fairly quickly" is a relative term, though; and in fact, if we stopped pumping green house gases into the air right now, it would take more than two hundred years for the atmosphere to regulate itself back to a pre-industrial level. So there really isn't that much time left. We have to take action, and we have to take action now. "All the extra carbon dioxide is good for the environment. It helps plants grow faster." This is another partial truth. If CO2 levels were the only factor farmers had to worry about, it'd be completely true. Unfortunately, water levels and soil conditions also play a major role, which means that the increase of plant growth will only be present in a few places, and thus will not be nearly enough to counteract the effect of global warming. This is not a hypothetical statement, either; Twenty years ago, Greenland could not grow barley. Now it can--because of the increased carbon dioxide levels. But in other areas of the world, the same phenomena is actually making it more difficult, not less, for plants to thrive. "The earth is warming because the sun is getting hotter." Wrong. 100% global warming myth. Methods for measuring the intensity of the sun exist, and it's been pretty darn consistent for the last twenty years. The minor variations that have been measured can hardly account for the massive environmental shift we've been undergoing. The upper echelons of energy industry is populated by groups of people who make shifting blame a way of life. That may work in politics, but it doesn't on the environment. The Atmosphere doesn't care who's to blame. We'll all be punished equally if we keep listening to bogus global warming myth explanations to make ourselves feel we do not have control.
